IDE & SATA

A friend recently installed a SATA drive with a new XP OS (where he wants
the boot to be). He has 2 other IDE Hdrives, one being his old C: . When he
boots into the SATA, Disk management recognizes the older IDE's which has
his data, but Explorer won't see them, and there's no drive letter with
them. If he unhooks the SATA, he boots into the old C:, and can see both
IDE's in explorer. CMOS will know the drives are there, but they can't get
drive letters when the SATA boots.?? Any ideas? Thanks

If I might add:
The old configuration (IDE) will still boot, with "master" being "master"
and the slave
will be the slave IF the SATA is not hooked up. When the SATA is hooked up,
the BIOS and disk management sees the IDE's, BUT they are not assigned a
letter, and in disk management the "assign" is greyed out (when running the
OS from the SATA). I had him check the settings, and he says they are what
I suggested, and even had him try one drive at a time ... still with the
same conclusion.
I'm stumped ... so with little experience, he's perplexed.

Argus:
Try this...

(I'm assuming in all this that your friend is uninterested in a multi-boot
configuration and that all he desires is a bootable SATA HDD with the other
two PATA HDDs serving as secondary HDDs for storage/backup purposes. I'm
also assuming that all the components involved are non-defective and
properly connected/configured). If that be the case...

1. After shutting down the machine have your friend (or yourself) disconnect
both PATA HDDs from their current IDE channel connectors

2. Boot with only the SATA HDD connected.

3. After shutting down the machine, connect one of the PATA HDDs as Primary
Master. Ensure the drive is correctly jumpered and boot with the SATA HDD.

4. Access DM and see if a drive letter has been assigned to the PATA HDD, or
if not, whether you (he) can assign a drive letter.

5. Assuming all is well at this point, shut down the machine and connect the
second PATA HDD either as Primary Slave or on the Secondary IDE channel and
boot.

6. Hopefully DM detects the second PATA HDD and has assigned it a drive
letter. If not, see if you (he) can assign a drive letter to that HDD.

Thanks Anna ... I'll have him give a try ... or travel the 30 miles and do
it for him :)
