ide ribbon cable question.....

Just built a computer for mom and swapped a couple of her 'old' 40 conductor
ribbons as I didn't have the 80's with me. Does this hurt anything? Should
I be sure to run all of one type of ribbon?.......thanks, ron

another question......I will have a dvd-rom, cd-r, and HDD. How should I
set the drives(ie master, slave etc.) and should I use both ide
sockets(primary, secondary)???. I just want a typical set up....

I'm figuring on the primary ide socket I should have the HDD as
master and the dvd-rom as slave(most used probably). On the secondary ide
socket I could have the cd burner. Or should I just have them all three
connected to the primary IDE socket with the HDD as master and the -roms as
slaves.?? Does it really matter??

THe worst it'll do is slow UDMA66 and above drives down to 33MBit.

Place the Cdrom devices on separate IDE chains.They will not slow down
the hard drives unless they are being accessed at the same time as the
hard drives so if installing from the use opposite ones to the hard
drives.
This also allows you to burn at full speed,"On-the-fly" e.g from Cdrom
drive to Vdrom/DVD drive.

Note:
You should use 80 wire IDE cables these days as they can give better
data transfers and of course are compatible with 66/100/133 drives.

40wire cables restrict data flow to 33mb/s
the 80 conductor cables enable 33,66,100,133mb/s

40's only really good for ancient HDD's that have a speed of ATA33, or
CD/DVD drives.

Depending on your controller and harddrive she may be losing some
throughput. The 40-pin will still work, but it's like having a car
that will go 120MPH and limited by the 70MPH speed limit.

40 wire IDE Ribbons are fine for CDROM Drives. This may slow down a
ATA 133/100 Hard Drive. Luckily most hard drives are designed to be
backward compatible. They will usually just adjust to a slower
transmission speed. There is probably some kind of drive test you can
run on it, but I dont have that kind of software. What may typically
happen is the drive will have to resend some data if the cable is not
fast enough.

First, get some 80 wire cables, at least for your hard drive. Many new
drives will go faster than ATA33 speeds, which you are limiting the drive
to with a 40 wire cable. And the better sheilding in the 80 will help with
noise.

Next, you can't have more than one master and one slave drive on a cable.
Can't have 2 slave drives. So put the hard drive as primary master, and
probably the dvd as primary slave. Gives you an optimum setup for recording
to the CD-R
