Hello All,
I have a wired & wireless lan combo... I have followed TO THE LETTER the
information provided in the KNOWLEDGEBASE on setting up ICS on XP and still
it doesnt work... I have broken the network down to 2 computers going thru a
hub/switch.... Note: they can see each other just fine in the general
networking sense of the word..

Computer one: has 56K modem and a 10/100 NIC

Computer two: has a 10/100 NIC

I went thru the complete ICS setup process as described above..

Computer one (the Server)
==================
THE NIC:
----------
was assigned a IP of 192.168.0.1 and a mask of 255.255.255.0
it has no or gateway IP's

THE MODEM:
---------------
Completely Dynamic connection with a 56k modem

COMPUTER TWO (The Slave)
===================
THE NIC:
----------
was assigned a IP of 192.168.0.2 and a mask of 255.255.255.0
its has gateway IP of 192.168.0.1 but no DNS IP

Ran thru the network Config Wizard as instructed, and this is the result...

The slave can see the shared modem on the server, it can even initiate the
dialup/hangup commands... but I cannot see the outside world.... what I do
see is the windows explorer screen that says NO GO.... I noticed at the
bottom that it has the nodns.html where windows displays the link addy when
you hover the mouse over a link on a web page....

I even tried putting 192.168.0.1 in the DNS in the tcp/ip config... to no
avail...

GOD I miss my DSL.. I had to move into an area where there is NO!! High
Speed avail, cept satalite, and I dont want to pay over $500.00 for just the
hardware.. not to mention the latency of it... So I am just muttling along
with dialup for email and general web searches... I dont want the kids
directly on mu computer, and dont want fights over who gets the use of the
phone line... so there is my delema... any idea why the slave cannot reach
the outside world???

I mean I followed the KB to the letter, and it just dont work!!

Thanks

What seems to work best is to set the ICS client PC to obtain IP address
automatically after the ICS host has been set up to share the internet
connection. The ICS host machine will act as a DHCP server on your LAN
and give the client PC an IP address in the range of 192.168.0.2-254 and
automatically become the internet gateway for the client.

Manually configuring static IPs on the client as I suspect you have done
seems problematic and intermittent at best. Although the KB articles
about doing so say it can work, in my personal experience it is not the
best way to do it. There are a few factors involved that are difficult
to get lined up in the proper sequence. These include Windows chacheing
IP routing information in the registry (which include Hostname,
Machinename and IP address for the Default Gateway) which do not get
necessarily reset upon a reconfiguration of the network or the client
PC; and "smart" hubs and switches building address tables and not
refreshing, requiring a power cycle (or two) to re-build the address tables.

BTW, living out in the boonies I too am stuck using dialup for now.

Steve, I have tried to let the slave automatically get the ip and other
stuff... only after the dictated way failed did I experiment trying to solve
the problem... not as
smart as I thought I was, I guess... but then again it's windows, what can
one expect.... ;)

Still trying to RE-learn linux.... after ten years this is a Tuffy too, oh
wait is that supposed to be Midas!!

;)

I'd eliminate things that might be interfering left over from previous
network configurations on the ICS client machine. Remove any unused
protocols from network properties. Search the registry for
DefaultGateway entries and remove any references to a gateway that is
not the current ICS host. Power-cycle your hub/switch to clear address
tables.

I have a Linux box connecting fine through a Windows ICS Host. That
would be another way to determine if the Host is configured correctly -
hook up a Linux box with default DHCP settings and if the Host is
configured right it will get right on the internet. If not then you've
got something screwey on the ICS Host config.
