Anyone any idea why my desktop icons have vanished only to be replaced by a
black square and how do I get it back to normal?

Did you use that third-party program (sorry, I forget the name) to
remove the shortcut arrows? The black squares instead of icons has been
reported on some computers and I had it happen on one of mine. Undoing
the shortcut change didn't help. I did a System Restore to before the
tweak and that returned my regular icons. No one knows why this happens
on some computers but I'd suspect it is a video driver issue.
