Icons dragged to desktop arrive in a diagonal

When I drag some file to the desktop they arrange themselves in a
diagonal (sloping down from the upper left).

I suspect this is getting done deliberately.

How can I change this so the icons arrange themselves in a column?

Right-click desktop > Arrange icons by...

Right click blank area of the Desktop, select Arrange Icons >>
Auto-Arrange.

That is for all the icons on the desktop not just he ones pasted there.

Does ALL icons. I want to change just those pasted there.
