Icons Disappeared After Installing Win XP Updates

I ran Windows Update and installed several of them, including IE7. After
doing so, most of my program icons, including all the MS Office apps, are the
generic file file type icons (white box with blue top border). I've deleted
my icon cache and I can't see that the file has been rebuilt after rebooting.
I also have two "CURRENT VERSION" folders in my registry under HKEY_LOCAL
MACHINE_SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows. Although all of my programs work just
fine, it's frustrating not being able to quickly discern the file type in an
email or when using Windows Explorer.

Any assistance is GREATLY appreciated -

IE7 causes a lot of problems on come machines.

1) Try uninstalling it from Control Panel >> Add or remove programs.
Uninstall the entry that says "Windows Internet explorer 7". You can
always reinstall it later if it isn't the culprit. Now reboot and
install all the updates from Windows Update.

2) Download TweakUI (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/
powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx).

3)Install Tweak UI

4) Open it from Start >> All Programs >> Powertoys for Windows XP >>
TweakUI

5) On the panel on the left, choose "Repair"

6) In the main section of the screen, choose "Rebuild Icons" from the
dropdown menu

7) Click "Repair Now". Wait till it finishes (may take a while)

8) Close TweakUI and reboot

First and foremost, THANKS!! Followed instructions but problem is still
unresolved. Forgot to mention that this is my 'work' laptop, I work remotely
and don't have access to the XP CDs. I noticed that the icon cache has
reappeared - that's a good thing, isn't it?? Any other ideas??

I had a similiar problem with my icons on my computer after an automatic
windows update. I've had a slew of other problems after a lot of automatic
windows updates. Let me know if this link works for you to this KB because
it worked for my computer (I only had to do the steps of chainging color
depth on my computer and never had to touch the registry for this fix to
work):

I just formatted my computer because the latest automatic updates messed
computer up so bad so I've resorted to not having them and running the
updates seperate on my own. I'm hoping the format fixes my problems and I
don't have hardware failure. Gotta love Microsoft's stuff and computers
sometimes!!

Thanks but didn't work.
