Icons can no longer be moved on desktop!!

Hi there!
Indeed, before I was able to shift them around...
but when I left-click any of them nowadays, they
won't allow me anymore to move them within the
screen...the "forbidden" symbol appears!!
Needless to say that the setting "arrange icons"
is NOT the cause of this "frozen" status; okay.
So thanks a lot in advance for any valid tips...
