Icon names in FrontPage 2003

When using FrontPage 2003 icons in webpages, on a Windows-based server with
Sharepoint services, I created a subdirectory named "icons" within my web.
This was accepted by FrontPage and the host but the web pages were unable to
use the subdirectory because "icons", "docs" and "manual" are apparently
reserved words in Linux. No warnings were given.

I then renamed the subdirectory "pageicons" and republished the website -
still no icons on the web pages. This time it is caused by the square
brackets in the standard icon names, typically "MCj00891900000[1].gif". Using
Firefox, everything worked OK, but using IE6 or IE7 (I don't have both on one
machine) the icon names could not be recognised. When I changed all the
square brackets to round brackets, everything worked in Firefox and IE6 and
IE7.

I now know the work-around, but are the square brackets needed for some
reason?

Hi,

AFAIK, sharepoint is not available on a Linux server, only Windows Server support SPS.

I merely quote what I am told by my host's technical support. Anyway, I doubt
whether the Sharepoint issues are much to do with the problem - I quoted them
just to set out the environment in which the problem occurred. I am running
on a Windows-based server, but my host tells me that the Linux issue is still
relevant to their set-up. Don't ask me why!

The second paragraph of my suggestion contains the issue which is real and
current. IE6 and IE7 do not like the square brackets in FrontPage icon names
when they are called from a subdirectory into a web page. For some reason,
Firefox does not seem to mind. Changing the square brackets to round brackets
solves the problem - I don't know whether it creates any others.

Where are getting these file with names that contain [] ??

The only time I've ever seen these is when saving a file that's been dug out of the
browsers cache
( temporary internet files )

Example: Open Google in IE and then click View > Source.
Note the file name in the Notepad Title bar.

!!??
