My Desktop Icons text labels have suddenly changed from transparent to
solid. I know this topic has been discussed before. I researched it,
and the same solution always pops up:

1) System Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>VisualEffects -
check
"use drop shadows for icon labels".

2) Right-click on Desktop ->Arrange Icons by>Lock Web items must be
cleared.

3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won't
work.
To check for web content: Display Properties>Desktop>Customize
Desktop>Web - make sure all checkboxes are clear.

4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.

I've done all that, but the problem still persists. Any other ideas?

Things to try:

1. Apply the XP theme. If that works, great.
2. If #1 doesn't work and the change was truly "sudden", do a System Restore
to when things worked.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier time"

Tried both. No go. Same problem.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

Since I can't see your computer, you'll need to answer that question
yourself. *Something* changed and you need to find out what it is.

I did not make any changes; that is, I did not install any new
software, remove any software, or make any cosmetic changes. However,
the problem appeared right after I rebooted. I routinely do a
Start/Shutdown/Restart at the end of the day, and let the PC come back
up to the login screen to begin the next day.

It is possible that a policy push came down overnight, (the sysadmins
do that all the time without telling us) so maybe it is something along
those lines. I have Admin rights to my workstation, so I could
probably change it back if I knew what to look for.

Thanks for your help.

What would have been *really* helpful would have been to say that you are on
a corporate workstation that is a member of a domain in your *first* post.

I *AM* one of the IT people. And believe me, I wouldn't be asking for
help on a newsgroup if I wasn't truely stumped.

Let me ask the question this way: I have TweakUI on my workstation.
Do you know where in the Registry and/or Policy settings the properties
for individual icons are located? Thanks again for your assistance.
