IBM T41 Radeon 9000 external digital display resolution

Greetings. I have an IBM T41, and the max external resolution with the
IBM delivered drivers is 1280x1024. Using tools and techniques (e.g.,
http://notebookforums.com/archive/index.php/t-3403 tenth post) I can
use the latest ATI drivers and get the desired 1600x1200 external
resolution -- but with that driver, the maximum internal (regular
laptop screen) resolution falls from the native 1400x1024 to
1280x1024.

Anyone have a notion of how to get the best of both worlds? some
mixing of the files from the IBM and ATI distribution?

Are you sure your tft has 1400*1024? I don't think it's standard. It's
either SXGA 1280*1024 or SXGA+ 1400*1050 or UXGA 1600*1200 (for
non-widescreen).
