IBM 300pl

Nitro®

Having a major problem with an old pc I have acquired. I can get the OS to
install, but once it boots to the desktop it reboots again. It does this in
safe mode also. I have tried installation with acpi enabled and disabled,
still no joy with the same rebooting as the desktop has finnished loading.
It's an IBM 300PL P2 350 with a 4.2GB HDD and 64MB of ram.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

It could probably be for various reasons. since it does it in safe mode, it
may indicate a hardware rather than software problem One cause I've had an
experience with is a faulty PSU. You may want to check the voltages or just
exchange it for a known-good one and see if the problem is solved.
Here's a link on how-to if you're interested

Thanks, been down that avenue and tried 2 psu's with no joy. Also tried
different ram, and different ram combo's ( although ram errors usually show
up during install process ). Resided to the fact that it's just too damned
old to do it's duty anymore :(

does your cpu overheat maybe - do the fans all work - you can check the
temperatures in the bios or with MotherboardMonitor.

btw - love the Garcia quote :)

It will sit in DOS quite happily without overheating, as it's an old PII 350
socket 1, a passive heatsink is standard. I can't check anytemps as it
reboots the moment the desktop has loaded :(( longest it has stayed running
is about 3 minutes after the OS has fully loaded, during which time it
appears stable, then just ....well reboots.

As for the quote, someone took offence to it recently and started to flame
me for it. I replied that maybe they should take it up with Mr.Garcia, but
I'm not sure if he was cremated :)

It is possible that the problem is a dead CMOS battery. A very
similar problem has been reported a few times in other groups. (I
believe the others were also IBM computers)

No, I wrote down the settings I was changing in order to keep track of what
had been tested. After each reboot, and power downs these still matched my
copies. Thanks

Have you tried resetting the mobo to defaults; The IBM website may
have lots of info about this machine. I think I've worked on the same
model. There's lots of settings in the CMOS. Have you brosed thru
them.

Yes, defaults and reset. Bios setting are limited, CMOS settings ? AFAIA
cmos holds the default setting for the bios and cannot be interfered with
other than by a flash or reset via a jumper?
