I would like to use my MS Works Suite 2001 with Vista.

I installed the software (MS Works Suite 2001) on my new computer operating
Vista. Works will not open its components. Is there a way I can use this
software as I like most of its features and have used it for several years?

Hmm, I am not sure Works Suites is even certified for Windows Vista. The
only thing I can recommend off the top of my head is to run the Works app in
compatibility, right each app, click Properties > select Compatibility (tab)
under Compatibility mode: > check the box that says 'Run this program in
compatibility mode for:' > click in the list box and select a suitable
version of Windows.

You might want to relay this issue in the following newsgroup:

Hi cyrnos:
Yeah it sure is beautiful country.
I'm not sure exactly what would consititute Works Suite, but my Dell
dimension, running Vista, came with MS Works as the primary office app. It
includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database, etc. and it works fine. The
main drawback is that the word processor is in a .wps format and not .doc.
People running MS office cannot open any document that you e-mail unless they
download the .wps reader from Microsoft. You can convert your files to PDF to
send them, but I have yet to find anything that will let me convert .wps to
..doc.

Andre, you better ask him detailed questions what he means by "will no open
its components." Perhaps it is an UAC issue with permissions not being given
to the folder. The MS Works is in Program Files, it is a privileged
territory.

When I copied wholesale my Sql Server databases from XP to Vista I had hell
of a time figuring out what was wrong and was about to reinstall my XP in
desperation but the resolution was laughingly simple. MSDN Forums people
helped.

I will bet a 100 dollars that MS Works is compatible with Vista.

You have to take into account, this is Microsoft Works Suite 2001, which I
believe includes Works version 6, so there is a possibility of compatibility
problems. I assume the components he is referring to is the Works
Wordprocessor, Spreadsheet and Database for example. Again, he might get
more detailed answers in the Works newsgroup.

His MS Works is very old: 2001 and as Andre pointed out it may have some
compatibility issues, although I kind of doubt it (not being an expert). the
reason for my doubt is that MS devotes a lot of attention to MS Works, it is
a major issue for them to maintain compatibility with legacy software. I am
sure there is a way to open those old file, although my hunch is intuitive.

Microsoft Office is even more a lucrative product than Microsoft Works and
they don't guarantee full compatibility of older versions of Office version
2000 and XP under Vista and Office XP was released after Microsoft Works 6.

Thanks to all of you helpfull folks. My main problem is that after
installing Works 6.0 from the 2001 MS Works Suite, I get the home page but
then can not access Picture It! and Publishing 2001 which are part of the
Suite. I have the MS Works that comes with Vista and the latest verson of MS
Word and Money 2007 but I want to use the old stuff as I became accustomed to
it and have lots of needs for it. Is there a hoop I can jump through to open
the CDs that contain the programs I want??? Thanks much!

Did you check under All Programs to see if there is a separate executable
for Picture It!? You could also check under C:\Program Files\ to see if
there is a separate Picture It! folder where you will be able to launch
application.

Works will save to RTF.

Powell,
I should have asked in my previous post, when you save in works pull
down "files of type". I'm sure that works will save in .doc format. I
have been using works in various versions since 1993 and I can't
remember when .doc was included but I think 6.0 had it. I am using 8.5
now and it will save in .doc and .docx.
