I-worm infection

My friend gave me his laptop to see if I can fix it. He
said it started acting strangely, so he downloaded a free
AV application. It told him he had the I-worm virus but
it couldn't remove the virus. Lately, the computer boots
up, then "restarts" after a virus message. It
always "restarts" right away after windows loads, so I
can't use windows to do anything.

Can I keep the virus from loading so I can install AV
software? What is the removal procedure?

His laptop has XP home loaded. Any help would be
appreciated.

Go to the following site and download the virus removal tool
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html also follow
the removal instructions.
