I want to keep a Contact and its content Private?

Susie

I have contacts and the content they contain in my Contacts List but I wish
to keep some of these private so that anyone viewing my Outlook or using it,
would not be able to find these contacts. Is it possible to hide them from
general view or else password protect them?
I have done some searching through the help files but can't find anything
and can't believe that such a simple option isn't available in the most
well-known Contacts product of Outlook.
Can anybody suggest anything or else point me to a new Contacts product that
does offer this ability?

And in what sort of scenario is this? Corporate? Shared Workstation? Home?
Single user? The reason I ask is that I don't think you can do what you want
directly, but there are ways round it.

Hi Gorden, Thank you for replying.
The system is for the Home but it is available to a friend who doesn't need
or want a separate login.
I just want to keep some data that is entered in the Contacts section away
from inquisitive eyes.
I know I can set up the friend as a User with their own Contacts but having
to go through the Log off Log On procedure just to find a telephone number or
find an address is driving me crazy and in any case, having the feature for
Contacts would in my mind, be a very good option.

So, if it is possible, can you tell me how, please?
I have Windows (32) XP Pro (latest updates), and Outlook 2003.

Many thanks,
Susie

Hi Again, Gordon,
I have now made a new folder in contacts and moved all the sensitive
contacts into the new one.
When I right-click this new folder, and go to properties, there is a tab
called Administration, where is offers access to all or just the owner;
however, this is all greyed out. How can I activate this option, so that I
make this folder only accessible to me, the owner?

The problem is, that anyone using your log-in, can see your contacts.
There's nothing you can do about this apart from password-protecting your
personal folders file and closing Outlook every time you have finished with
it.

And even then there are freely-available pst password crackers on the
internet....

That feature is for Exchange server accounts only.

Make a second windows acct - and instead of logging off, use fast user
switching. It only takes a few seconds and will allow you to keep all of you
stuff private.

Hi Dianne,
So, does this mean they will have a blank Outlook to play with and cannot
access my version?

Hi Gorden, Thank you for replying.
The system is for the Home but it is available to a friend who doesn't
need
or want a separate login.

Tell your firend that since it is your computer, they have no choice and set
them up with their own Windows username. If you value your data at all,
you'll do this. At the very least, give thiem their own mail profile and
password-protect your PST.
I know I can set up the friend as a User with their own Contacts but
having
to go through the Log off Log On procedure just to find a telephone number
or
find an address is driving me crazy and in any case, having the feature
for
Contacts would in my mind, be a very good option.

Fast User Switching will lessen the pain.

access my version?

Yes. They'll also have their own My Document and all the other
user-specific folders. DO NOT make their account an administrator account.
A limited account should work.
