You really need to have at least 2GB of RAM for Vista. Your processor and
graphics card will be adequate. Are you attempting a clean install? This
is the preferred method. Unplugging all external hardware with the
exception of the mouse, keyboard and monitor is a very good practice. You
probably can leave speakers connected during the process.

save an image of your current XP OS (use Acronis or google for some free
imaging solution), then do a clean install of Vista - google for that too.
There's also a Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor at Microsoft website that you
might want to run - rathere than the one in Vista.

Kevin, I run home Premium with 1 gig of RAM.
It doesn't set the world on fire, but it works!

Kevin;
Many run very will on 1 GB RAM.
Others need more but not all.
1 GB or even 512 MB will allow windows vista to install with no
problems.
The OP has 1 GB RAM so the installation issues are not related to
that.

Yes, it will work. But 2 GB of RAM is the minimum just about everyone is
suggesting to perk up Vista. Just like a Windows XP system will work with
256 MB of RAM, but works a lot better with a minimum of 512 MB on board.

Yep, I know. I was pointing out that 2 GB of RAM is the suggested minimum
in the computing world.

RAM quality might also mater; I run Vista on 1GB (2x512GB dual channel) DDR
HyperX PC3500 (2.5,3,3,7,1) and Vista score is 4.5 - for "Memory operations
per second."
CPU - a 2.8GHz Northwood - makes 4.0 Vista score and overclocked mildly at
3.06 GHz gets a 4.3 Vista score.
I cannot see any noticeable difference in speed between XP Pro SP2 and Vista
Ultimate except for Vista's horribly slow decompression for .zip - 7-Zip
does fine, though.

VISTA has the unique abilty to refuse being "perked up."
