I want to imbed text in a document but I don't want it to print when the
document is printed. Is that possible?

Select the text, then use Format>Font, put a check in the box for Hidden.

In order to see & edit the text, turn on the Show/Hide (¶). With the
non-printing characters on or off, the hidden text doesn't print unless you
choose to do so through print options.

Apply the Hidden font attribute to the text. In Tools > Options, check
"Hidden text" on the View tab, and UNcheck it on the Print tab. You'll
see the text on screen but not on paper.

There are more elaborate schemes involving macros to intercept the
print commands
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/InterceptSavePrint.htm) and
temporarily hide text marked by bookmarks.
