i want to change user name of administrator, as it is not secure to leave
administrator as a user name on a domain server, i tried to rename it from

Renaming the administrator does not make the account secure. Make sure you
are using strong passwords and have other security measures in place. The
hackers use the SID, not the user name to hack, so changing the name does
not slow them down at all.

Renaming the administrator account does not increase security. In
particular, the SID for the administrator is always the same. Whether
he is called administrator or ronald.mcdonald.

I am looking to change the Administrator user name to something other than
the default and I'm wondering what I need to look out for. Which tasks and
processes and anything that will be disrupted by changing the Admin account.
I have five domain controllers running 2000 and ten more servers running 2000
and 2003. What problems should I be on the lookout for?

Also, does this add any security? If not what alternatives do I have that I
can do to make the account more secure (other than password).

As the first responder already said, the administrator SID is still the same so
whatever the name is it will still get resolved back to the SID and the SID is
what NTFS uses for ACLs and other things. Use can use the domain controller
policy or local security policy to rename the account properly.

Thank you for your help, but I was looking for a less obvious and more
in-depth response.
