I want to be able to edit a field only when it is empty

In Access 2003, I use a form to populate a database. For a specific
(existing) record, I want to be able to edit a field only when it is empty (a
value was not completed before). And I, also, want to be able to add new
records. Many thanks from a beginner!

How about something like:

Sub Form_Current()
If Len(Me.txtWhatever & vbNullString) > 0 Then
Me.txtWhatever.Locked = True
Else
Me.txtWhatever.Locked = False
End If
End Sub
