At this point, when I click the mouse the entire slide appears. I want each
segment, each line to appear with its own mouse click. I'm lost here.
Thanks. A.

You might like to further modify Tohlz's answer by clicking the expand icon
in custom anim. (double down arrow). You can now see each line - make the
first line after previous and the others on click.

This way you start the slide with the first line showing.

Hi André,
In PowerPoint 2002/XP and above:
First, add an entrance effect.
Double click on the added entrance effect. This will bring up the Effect
Options dialog box.
Select the Text Animation tab.
Under Group text, select By 5th level paragraphs.
OK your way out.
Also set the first effect as "On Click".

For PowerPoint 2000 and below,
in the Custom Animation dialog box, put a checkmark on Grouped by.
Select 5th level paragraphs.
