I want an ATI TV Wonder 650 PCI Express

T

The Mighty Favog

The card has been described on the company website for some time:

http://ati.amd.com/products/tvwonder650/PCIe/index.html

But I can't find one for sale. I called ATI/AMD this morning. The
sales department first tried to sell me the PCI version, and when it
became obvious I was serious when I asked about PCIe, I was referred
to the "Pre-Sales" department. The next guy told me the company
doesn't provide information on release dates to the Pre-Sales
department. Wow.

I've built a new computer with a motherboard (Asus P5K Deluxe) that
has no AGP slot. Since my AIW 9600 XT wouldn't work in my new system,
I decided to go with a Radeon HD 2600 and supplement it with a video
capture card. The PCI version of the TV Wonder 650 looks good, but
the "forthcoming" PCIe version looks better. So I wait.

And I wonder -- does anybody reading this newsgroup have any idea when
the PCI Express version of the TV Wonder 650 will be released?

The reviews were saying early September, but it's looking like it may be
late September according to a response a poster at this link,
http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33900432, got from the ATI
Customer Care department on their long running battle trying to get the CMC
software to capture properly with the 650 pci version.

Thanks. Here's the response I received when I posed my question directly
to the ATI online store. All I asked was, "Where can I buy an ATI TV
Wonder 650 PCI Express?"

Late September turned into mid-October, but now, finally:

I would like to get my hands on one too. I just purchased a Hauppauge
HVR-1800 MCE from Newegg which has the same specifications, only it has
separate FM antenna in on the back. Which worked out best for me. Cable
for ntsc, off-air for atsc, and off-air for FM

I purchased the Hauppauge because it WAS THE ONLY SHIPPING BOARD that had
all my old pci card had (Avermedia UltraTV) plus atsc. Hauppauge and TV
Wonder 650 pci-e both look very much the same. Solid-state front ends and
mpg-2 encoders. These solid-state boards are SLOW changing channels. Going
from ntsc to atsc or fm takes upwards to 12 seconds or more. Be
forewarned - no flipping channels quickly allowed.

I've had this new board running 5 days now. Let me say first and foremost
(for the non VISTA and MCE users) the front-end software you are running
makes all the difference in the world on how enjoyable the experience you
are going to have using your tuner card. Avermedia spoiled me; I miss its
features. I've also read that ATI isn't all that great in the User
Interface Department either. Hope I'm wrong. I have been thinking about
purchasing this board just to see how well it tunes and interfaces with the
user. It's just another $100.00 give-or-take. Oh- and don't bother looking
for any detailed data on what does what, or how the interface works. Their
isn't any. Be warned - the shipped software on the Hauppauge does not have
FM Record mode. (I can't believe this.)

Here's a question for you. I put the tuner card into the pci-e1x slot,
right next to the ati x1950pro in the pci-e 16x master slot. I have two
pci-e 1x slots, on either side of the pci-e 16x master slot, or a second
pci-e16 slot set aside for a second vid card for crossfire mode. Now the
manual on this mobo said that placing any card in the second pci-e 16x slot
will force both master and slave slots to revert to 8x speed. I want to
know if I will take a big hit in performance on the vid card placing the
tuner card in the second pci-e x16 slot or not? (I suppose I could just do
it and see?)

Mobo ASUS P5W DH Deluxe: CPU E6600: Ram 4gig Crosshair: Video ATI x1950pro:
OS Win XP Pro SR2.
