The computer is a 4-5 year old Compaq Presario. I am not sure if it supported windows XP but it was installed over windows 98 and it wiped everything else out. When it was installed, it said it must be restarted to finish installation. Now when it restarted it said 39 minutes left for installation. Half way through I picked the computer name, then with about 14 minutes left it freezes. Every time it freezes with 14 minutes left. Since this computer doesnt support XP how can I get rid of it? How can I get to ms-dos, when it is started it goes right to installation. Windows 98 is no longer on this computer. What should I do to get this computer going again. Thanks.

Hopefully you have a copy of 98 lying around somewhere to put back on.
Using a 98 startup disk(you did make one right??) format your HD
This will of course delete everything on that drive but at least now you will be
able to reload your copy of 98 and all of those lovely programs that you paid so
much money for

On that XP Cd there is an upgrade advisor wizard run that to see if your system
is compatable with XP

You could try pulling all the cards out of the Compaq except the video and
see if that will get you into XP. It is possible that there is a conflict
somewhere.

To get rid of XP you should be able to just boot with a Windows 98 floppy
and at the command prompt type FORMAT C:

When you run a Windows XP as an upgrade overtop of Windows 98 XP will retain
the FAT32 format and will not install as NTFS. Therefore a simple format
should get rid of XP and you can then reinstall Windows 98

Greetings --

However, if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to
backup the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS,
then all you need do is boot into Safe Mode and Start > Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions _must_ be met for the
uninstall option to be available.
