I saved over a word document that I need to use.

I was working on a file saved it, started on a new one in the same document
and forgot to "save as" a new file name and accidentally saved over it (I
just pressed save, so now it has the same file name as the previous one I was
working on). Now I can see in properties (under General) "Modified: a time
and a date" How do I open that version of the document?
Under: File - Versions, there are no options!

If you have turned on the "Always create backup copy" option at Tools >
Options > Save *and* if you've only saved the new one once, then you can
retrieve the backup.

If you have not yet closed the document, you can do Edit > Undo many times
to undo the recent changes to get back to the 'old' document.

If you make regular backups of your documents, then you can retrieve the
backup.

Otherwise, your old document is gone.

Hope this helps.

Word makes regular backups while you are working (these allow it to recover
your work after a power failure or crash) normally these are deleted
automatically and you never see them.

If you use file recovery software such
as "Restoration v2.5.14" (from
http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=1672) you may be able to
find and recover temporay files (backups) made while you were working on the
original document. If you find these files (often .tmp) you can some times
go to file and open in Word, set it to show all files, then select and open
the temporary file. Some times this will give you junk but sometimes it is a
more or less complete copy of your work! Note well, these backup files are
often hidden so if you can't find files that you have undeleted you may have
to unhide them as well!

Best regards
