happened to find this on my programs list, says it allows registration of
iris ocr software. what does that mean, why, and do i have to have this?

Could the software have come with a scanner?
I don't know how much or how little you know, so I'll start at the
beginning.
OCR refers to Optical Character Recognition.
It is possible to use a scanner to scan a page of text and then have OCR
translate that text into something like Word or Wordperfect.
Remember buying anything like that, or getting something like that with a
scanner?
The first scanner I bought many years ago included OCR software. The one I
bought last year did not.

i'm still looking through my apps. it may be just that; HP all in one 4200.
i'll keep looking. thanx.

Google for info on it.

Its exactly that, optical character recognition software for HP all in ones
(sometimes known as printer/scanner/copier PSC).
Mine has a help file for the "readiris", in which, IRIS is listed as part of
help.
