I need some serious help. My Win XP Home Upgrade CD may be corrupt

Hello. I have performed and succefully installed Windows XP Home Edition many
times over the years with the 2002 version. However the last two installs
while it was still installing the monitor screen went all crazy and one of my
brothers friends said its was something related to buffer overflow or
something along those lines. Also after each of the last two times, Windows
just will not read any CD's/DVD's that are in perfect condition EVEN THOUGH
it reads in DOS and let me install windows from this same DVD Burner. That
has also never happened before. And, I have a regular CD-ROM Drive connected
through the same IDE Channel and it works like a charm. So I'm rather
confused as to why now it refuses to work. What options are there and can
Microsoft possibly send me a replacement disc with all the latest updates as
well? I would like help as soon as possible. Everything else works great.
Even after running the Hardware INF Updater on my motherboards Software CD
didnt solve the problem. The 2002 was moderately scratched. However, they
were only surface scratches which today I was able to completely remove
through the use of a local store's professional buffing machine. Even That
didn't help. So I am at a loss now. And, I think the only way I will be able
to install windows no problems is if I can somehow recieve a replacement disc
that isnt corrupted and is hopefully updated. (It can be streamlined) which I
was actually trying to set up on making a Streamlined Install CD before this
happened, but my main IDE Hard Drive had stopped working, so I had to install
Windows on my SATA Drive. Then I had to install again on the FRESH OLD IDE
Hard Drive because my motherboard JUST WOULD NOT boot Windows from the SATA
Drive while an IDE Drive was connected. And those installs had run perfectly
fine no corrupted grafics or no reading/ light on/off blinking of my DVD
Burner problems. I have listed all the steps I have done, and hope somone can
provide some help. Because really, I am at a loss. And the CD is Retail
Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade Edition Version 2002. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

OEMs still ship pcs with xp 2002 edition +SP2 installed,if youre xp cd is
caput
then contact microsoft for a replacement.However,if youre pc hardware isnt
running & needs replacement,a xp cd wont help.Why wont the board boot to
a SATA hd with xp installed,sure the board is set up right.PCs ship with
the SATA
controller disabled,+ once enabled,adding a IDE hd,reverts the board to its
default
setting (set to boot to new IDE hd,moving SATA down the list on priority boot
device).....

Consider that the video hardware or memory faults may also be contributing
to this.

Also after each of the last two times, Windows

The drive may be failing.

EVEN THOUGH

Is the setup CD readable in any other drive? If so, consider replacing the
drive; they are not expensive, and they do fail.

Probably not. MS generally sends an SP2 disk, *if* they send you a
replacement. You still will need updates, and last time I checked, there
were about 80.

You can, however, get replacements if are the original purchaser, if you
have a retail license AND if you (still) have proof of purchase - and
it'll cost you.

CDs don't generally corrupt, as the data cannot be changed. The disc can,
however, become damaged. There is a difference, and not just in the words
used.

Slipstreamed, you mean.

Take your CD to another system with plenty of drive space and known-good CD
drives, and CD copying software (for example, Nero).

Use this CD software to make an exact copy of yours. Use the lowest
speed. If you can, create an ISO or NRG or whatever disk image on the hard
disk, then burn that image at low speed to a new CD. Watch carefully for
error messages; these will appear during the initial copy.

To test it, after burning, shut the system down and reboot from the CD.
When it comes to the point where you get into Setup, cancel. The disk is
working.

Use this copy and the full download SP2 file, and Autostreamer, to create
the slipstreamed CD.

You need to check the motherboard manual, as some boards require special
settings to boot from (or even recognise) SATA in this circumstance.

It's no big deal, as long as you know what and where the settings *are*.

Try making a copy of the CD. As long as it's properly readable and
copyable, the contents are the same as they always were. If anything, the
disk is physically damaged, not corrupted.

Alternately, there's another approach. If you have a genuine retail XP
install CD - these are all the same. You can use any copy, as long as it's
the same type - in your case, a retail upgrade XP Home CD. If it's a new
SP2 disk, that should work too. What's important here is that the install
key match the CD type.
