I messed up a user account

Bill

I saw the "control userpassword2" command in a post recently and used it to
look at the users on my pc (just myself, the wife and daughter). I was
looking at the wife's and there's an option under advanced for a power users
group. When I tried to change her to this group it came up saying this
wasn't possible because the group didn't exist (so don't ask me why the
option is there). Anyway, now there's no option for her to logon when the pc
is booted. I.E. she cannot choose her id because we don't get an option for
her. Her documents still exist (but are locked), and using the same command
doesn't show her either.

Any ideas as to what I can do to fix this?

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Use an acct (with Admin privileges) to take ownership of her Document
folder. I assume you have Xp Home since you mentioned you had to use
"control userpassword2" to access the User Acct settings.

1. Log-in with Acct that has Admin privileges.
2. Reboot in Safe-Mode

To take ownership of a folder:

1. Right-click the folder you want to take ownership of, and then click
Properties.
2. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one
appears).
3. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
4. In the Name list, click your user name, Administrator if you are logged
in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take
ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace owner
on subcontainers and objects check box.
5. Click OK.

The following message appears, where folder name is the name of the folder
that you want to take ownership of:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do
you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you
Full Control?
All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.

6. Click Yes.
7. Click OK, and then
8. reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the
folder and its contents.

Once you have access to your folder, copy all her data to another folder
(temp folder).

Then create another User-acct for her. Then copy back all the data from
temp folder to her acct folder.

For Win Xp Pro, you must disable Simple File Sharing first to do the steps
in above.
By default, Xp Pro uses Simple File sharing when not joined to a domain.
