I have OL2003, do I actually need a virus scanner?

Hmmm, I have OL2003 and that blocks attachments by default (except some well
known formats such as DOC, XLS, ZIP, etc.).

Do I actually need a virus scanner?

You should run a virus scanner set to 'autoprotect' - viruses can come in
via scripts on web pages and other sources. But you don't need to scan email
(especially outbound), unless you tend to open every attachment that isn't
blocked by outlook (like zips).
