I have no country/region selections from which to choose

There is a copy of this question in the General Outlook section. I put it
there before realizing there was a Contacts section and that it is likely
more appropriate here. My apologies.

I thought maybe Outlook 97 (i.e. Office 97) had a problem but I've upgraded
to Outlook 2003 (i.e. Office 2003) and this very annoying problem still
persists.

I cannot enter/edit phone numbers for my contacts. When I try, I get the
"Location Information" window wanting my country/region, area code, type of
dialing, etc. I don't understand why this is needed since I don't use a
phone line connection but that's a minor issue. The big problem is I have no
countries to choose from in the pull down menu thus I can't enter anything.

I would think I'd have the same selections as I do under Regional and
Language Options but it seems this identical data is needed in 2 locations?

Adding insult to injury, when I try to select "OK" or "Cancel", I get an
error saying I must enter a country and takes me right back to the Location
Information window. At this point I must open the Task Manager and kill
Outlook.

Any ideas?

Did you set your dialing location correctly for your operating system?
That's what Outlook uses.

I don't remember setting up any dialing location ever. I didn't install my
OS (Windows XP) nor have I ever had a dialing modem to set up. When would I
have had the opportunity to set up my dialing location for my OS? Is it
something I can do (or redo) now?

It would seem to me that Control Panel->Phone and Modem should at least have
a list of countries from which to choose regardless of some set up error. Is
it possible these values were removed from my registry somehow?

Thanks

It is fixed. I am a little disappointed in myself because I don't know
exactly what I did to fix it and I know others suffer from these symptoms. I
believe the thing that fixed it was:
I ran Setup from the Windows XP CD. I then selected "Install Optional
Windows Components". I selected to install only Accessories and Utilities
and then just Accessories under that which mean I was installing things like
the Calculator, Character Map, Clipboard Viewer, etc. My idea was just to
install something from the CD in hopes of getting asked to input
country/region information and get the selections from the CD. I got no such
prompt but I did install those simple things. I am pretty sure I did nothing
else and the countries got loaded, but unfortunately I cannot be 100% sure.
I hope it was this simple and someone can try and verify that's all it takes.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Russ. If you have a Windows
XP expert near you, maybe she/he will know if what I did could've loaded the
country/region information.

I've always installed my own OS, and the "typical" installation has always
provided the list of countries from which to select as my dialing location.
You can always ask in one of the Windows XP newsgroups.
