I hate windows

with the blinding hot passion of 10,000 burning suns. But my kids want
it so I put up with it ... for now. A short list of the problems I
have on an ongoing basis...

can't install windows media player 10 - no error message, just
continually cycles thru the install wizard. Quick search on the web
turns up...nothing.

security issues - the security model sux badly. I continually have
problems trying to manage access to files across users. In linux, it
took someone maybe 10 minutes to explain the security model, and I
rarely have issues. Software installation is a nightmare because none
of the software allows for setting access during
installation/inconsistency in doing so.

Internet explorer - many issues. I keep getting the same dialogs asking
security/password config questions every time I log in. Pop up blockers
do not work, spyware, etc. Problems managing passwords and plugins.

Here's a typical session of fun on windows xp. Hmm, lets try Microsoft
update and see if it fixes the wmp 10 issue. Ok, it asks to install a
new activex control before I can use microsoft update (that's REALLY
bad. Maintenance of a computer using complicated activeX controls that
require updating! Hmmm, what if the problem you are having prevents the
installation of activeX controls! What genious programmer in Redmond
throught that one thru). Ok, I continue. It asks me to click on the
"Explorer information bar" to install the control. Hmm, I don't have
one of those and "view/toolbars" doesn't show it either. Wow, this is
going really well. Ok, the web site has the link that says "take these
steps to solve the problem". I click on that link and it takes me
to....well, you would think an article that helped me with the problem.
But no, it takes me to a "Find solutions" page that has a product drop
down that ... this is good... doesn't have IE in it. In fact, the drop
down has "Office 2003", "Office XP", "SQL Server 2000", "Exchange
2000", and "Exchange 2003" in it. Hell with it. It's the weekend and I
don't have time for this shit.

This is the most popular os in the free world? God help us.

Hey, I'm hardly the biggest fan of Microsoft, but most of the problems
you have sound like they are user created ones.

(snip)

Take your machine to a local professional (not your version of
BigStoreUSA) and have him set the computer up properly so your kids can
play games. Have him/her show you how to maintain the system. Done
properly, maintenance takes only a few minutes each week.

Then buy your own Mac or PC and put Linux on the PC.

Why would you _want_ media player 10 ?

Yes, IE sucks. That is why Mozilla Firefox is taking over.

It's only the most popular because it is/was shoved down everyone's
throats.

I agree with kurttrail, sounds like 'Operator Error' to me.

In your obvious haste to post.....you fail to mention ANY information
about your system or installed software, both of which would provide needed
details to address your issues.
"Can't install WMP10....a quick searh of the internet turns up
nothing"......must have been a very quick search. First peek out of the box
turns up turns up 1,950,000 hits:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=can't+install+windows+media+player+10&btnG=Google+Search
A betting man would go with "your answer is probably contained therein." My
guess is that some installed security app, i.e. AV, spyware, firewall, etc.
is interfereing with your dl'd and install.
"Software installation is a nightmare?".......XP SP2, properly setup,
maintained and prepared for an install, is IMHO, the easiest of any OS I
have used to date. As you did not provide details about particular
software, I can only suggest that you RTFM.
"IE a nightmare, continuous log in requests, popup blockers don't work,
passwords, plugins".......this is, no doubt, self-inflicted.
The "genious in Redmond" came up with something to validate legitimate
copies of XP before allowing updates, duh. Yes, Virginia, pirates still
exist.....we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto. Once again, it sounds as if
you have something that is blocking the proper install of this
feature.........try installing from the Safe Mode.
Not intended to sound critical........it's just that I have been running
XP SP2 for quite some time and have not experienced any of the issues you
mention. Just don't be so quick to place blame undeservedly.....the next
time you "point a finger", stand in front of a mirror.

And 15 links to Microsoft pages.

More attitude.

As a former contract employee for Microsoft, let me tell you
something. I complained one day (I worked on a help desk)
about the RUDENESS of "mid-level management." I was told,
"Bill Gates and Microsoft don't give a DAMN about our
customers. We ONLY care about their money, and how to get it
from THEIR pockets into OURS! We make our products BARELY
usable, so that they're SLIGHTLY better than the
competition, then we choke the competition to death, and we
ship our products!"

Read America's first legal monopoly. A CONVICTED
monopolist, Bill Gates TRULY proved to the world that he was
simply TOO BIG and TOO RICH to prosecute.

You may like him. Sun Microsystems and Netscape don't.

I am so sick of all this nonsense....that goes on ad nauseum. I have used
and use all the major operating systems. They all have plus and minus
points, but XP is not worse than the others.

Most of the time when reading these diatribes and the comments of people at
work that use a Max or Linux, one gets the distinct impression that we are
not dealing with science at all here...but pedestrian politics. Down with
the succesful and up with the rebels! type crap. Similar in tone to all the
California drivers who will only buy a foreign hybrid car or a 60s
Volkswagen because it would be too mainstream capitalist to do anything
else.

Uhhhh, I must have missed the part where "dsailor" actually ASKED for
help.......
What I noticed was a misguided rant. Suppose a user went into a Macintosh
forum with a post like "I HATE Macs!" I'm fairly certain that the
mac-fanatics would be so helpful that I'd run right out and buy a Steve Jobs
poster to hang over my bed... get real.
Ask for help with as much info as you can and your sure to get, at the very
least, a point in the right direction.

Also, if your self admittedly non-technical question isn't specific enough
to generate helpful respones then a technically oriented response can
sometimes come off sounding surley. So when you expect others to take your
shortcomming into consideration you shoud realize that it's a two way
street.

I'll admit that Windows "security" has certainly been well "documented". The
reason for this is that daily we're hearing of new insecurities in this
operating system and this has been going on for years now. This record is
certainly nothing Microsoft should be proud of. (Nor should Windoze users).
