I had a virus. How do I reopen my old e-mails which are in folder.

I had a series of viruses (despite Norton) and used HP recovery to reinstate
Windows. I think I have found my old e-mails in files labelled Outlook1,
Outlook2, etc but using File and Open doesn't seem to work. Am I missing
something obvious ? Any suggestions ?

File>Open>Outlook Data File in Outlook doesn't work?
