I get a frame, but no picture when inserting a picture in word

When inserting a picture in word I see the frame, but not the picture. When
I click on the read button on the tool bar I see the picture. I regulary
insert pictures and never have had this problem. What setting did I change?

Tools > options > view > uncheck 'picture placeholders'
