In the last few days when I shut down outlook express it gives the the
message that outlook express can save disk space by compacting messages, and
the options 'ok', 'cancel', and 'dont show me this'. I dont care about disk
space since I have 2/3 of the disk free so would not like to sacrifice any
speed with compacting. But the message keeps coming up nagging me. I
clicked dont show me this, but I guess when I click cancel or the red X then
the information is not remembered. Is there any way to shut it up?

I have asked the same question - it seems to be a
new 'feature' of SP2 - it seems we're stuck wiht it - why
can't we have a choice!

You DO have a choice. No one twisted your arm or put a gun to your head
to force you to install SP2, did they?

Why don't you just let it compact. What that does, I believe, is remove
deleted messages from the message store, not compressing the messages.
If you don't you might eventually run into problems. Also make sure you
don't store messages in the inbox. That leads to an increased
probability of corruption. Move them to other messages boxes. If what I
say is not right I am sure one of the OE experts will jump in.

Do not click the "don't show me this" because it will then continue to
compact and you have no choice. Been there, done that. Now I wish
I knew how to stop the compacting.

You seem to be confusing "Compacting folders" with "Compressing files".
The e-mail store is a database file and compacting a database removes
the dead space in the file by moving all the space the deleted messages
occupied. This makes the file smaller and speeds things up. To compare
with a harddrive it would be the equivilent of emptying the Recycle Bin
and then running Defrag. You can manually perform the operation at any
time by simply going to File, Folder, Compact. Basic mail system
maintenance. I hope this information reduces your stress level.

Thanks for the info.
