I was working on a small database, trying to figure out the security stuff
and then set it aside to set up my new computer. When I set up my new
computer, I changed the name I use to login to the network. Now when I try
to get into the database I was working on, I can't open it. I get an error
that says something about permissions. I'm pretty sure the name change is
why, but it might be that I moved it to a different computer. Any ideas on
how I can get into that database? I still have the old computer and the
database is on it. Is there someway to shut all the security stuff off so I
can copy the database to my new computer again?

More than likely, you need to copy and use the same _workgroup_ file that
you used on the old machine. Copy the <whatever>.MDW file to the new
machine, and specify it in the command line portion of a shortcut in an icon
on your desktop, or "join" that workgroup file.

I'm pretty sure that it isn't the system login name change, because the two
are unrelated.

However, if you applied security without downloading and studying the
Security FAQ from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads, you should do so now.
It formats to 39 pages on my system, and it's all important -- there's no
"filler" material there. Without it, you stand a good chance of missing
something and making your database either so secure that even you can't get
into it, or so insecure that most anyone can.

The microsoft.public.access.security newsgroup is devoted to Access security
issues, if you have questions when you study the FAQ (and you'd be an
exception if you do not).

Lots of possibilities, but try this idea. When you open the database,
do you get a password request box? It is likely populated with your new
network name. If so just change it to the old name. Then if you have the
rights, you can then add your new name to the list of users and give
yourself the rights you need. After that you can use either name.

As it is, it appears Access does not know who you are, since you now
have a new name.
