I can't shut down my pc!

Over the past few days, my computer has been refusing to shut down. After
going to Start/Turn Off Computer/Turn off (the usual way of shutting down) I
get the usual 'Windows is shutting down message' and then when it goes to
'saving your settings' it just stays like that indefinitely. I once left it
like this for 24 hours but it showed no signs of ever shutting down.

I have checked for adware, spyware, virusses etc and found nothing. I have
deleted all my temporary internet files and checked everything I can think
of. Is there something I might have missed?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi,
Have you installed anything recently or made any setting changes that may
not appear to be the reason but it could be worth un-installing the program
or changing the settings back. If you can start in "Safemode" then try a
shutdown then you can see if with minimal drivers it will shutdown. If it
does shutdown correctly check you start-up programs in msconfig see if there
is anything unusual.
From the cmd prompt you can try the shutdown command "shutdown -f" which
should force all programs to close.

see what happen, it may give you an idea

Many thanks to both of you for your swift and patient responses. I have
installed a few things recently a demo version of a computer game, an update
to some media players and a new internet browser (firefox). Do you think any
of these sorts of things could be casuing the problem?
Anyhow, I will try uninstalling them and following your instructions to see
what happens.
I have checked the troubleshooting link provided by Byte and there appears
to be a microsoft fix available for download which I will also try.
Once again many thanks for your help :-)

This happened to me on my laptop. I created another (administrator) user
account. Once I established that it would shut down okay with the new
account I just moved my files over to the new account and deleted the old
one!

Hi Glenn,

I had this problem once with a laptop. I set up a new (administrator) user
on my system. I logged in to the new user and checked it shut down okay in
the new user. That being established i just moved all my "My Documents"
files over to the new user and deleted the old one.

Thanks everybody, I finally got the computer to sleep. I did it by getting
rid of the automatic restart function on
mycomputer/properties/advanced/start_up_and _recovery/settings. Although why
it never occurred to me to do as 'Jim Robin' did is quite beyond me :-)
thanks again
