Make sure both computers' netbios over tcp/ip is enabled. Also, any errors in the Event Viewer?

I have the same problem - new machine with Windows Vista Business
pre-installed. I have a small home network with 2 other machines (both
XP-Pro SP2) and all in the same workgroup.

Both of the xp machines can address each other using \\machinename but the
vista machine cannot. It sees the machine fine using \\192.168.1.xx but not
using netbios name. Netbios is fully enabled in Vista but nothing I do lets
it address the other machines by name.

Can anyone help?

You may want to installs the LLTD Responder component on Windows XP-based computers. Check this page for the details. Please post back with the result.

Boy Howdy!

Yes I could find a network shares creation screen, apparently no "Shared
folder" is created immediately. But more than 1 client (40) will want to be
able to see and share items among a workgroup, and I could not find a place
to set the workgroup for the Windows home Premium PC. I've added the LLTD
software to a memory stick to carry around.

New item, the file transfer Wizard ran on the Vista PC, but nothing appeared
on the XP SP2 Box and when I ran the XP Wizard it did not see a "new
computer." I'm going to look some more here to see if it has come up for
someone else. The responses in this thread are so fast!! Thanks Robert L

2 reboots, probably caused by Norton so far. screens look nice though.

I had done that previously, and while I now see the machines by name in the
Network Map picture, I still can't address them with //name or http://name

I fixed it.

Finally tracked down the problem to the Symantec Norton Internet Security
which was pre-installed on the machine. I had previously tried using its
inbuilt "Disable" function but it seems this does not properly disable the
firewall. So I simply uninstalled it and all seems to be working again.

Thanks to all those who helped.

I found a solution for my problem (it is not the best one but works), now I goI to explain it to people with same problem (good search by ip but not for name). Set all machines with a fixed ip instead dynamical one. Create or edit a host file (text file) with the resolution names for each ip, example: 192.168.1.10 machinename (one line for each machine). Then in properties of the TCP IP set the LMHOST file on. Works fine. Meanwhile I hope anyone finds a good solution for the dynamic ips. Regards.

Hi, I have installed the LLTD Responder component on Windows XP but the problem is not resolved yet, Vista can find other xp computers by ip but not by name, and vice-versa, xp can resolve by ip but not by name. Anything else? thanks.

What were you using for name resolution prior to your fix?
I found a solution for my problem (it is not the best one but works), now I goI to explain it to people with same problem (good search by ip but not for name). Set all machines with a fixed ip instead dynamical one. Create or edit a host file (text file) with the resolution names for each ip, example: 192.168.1.10 machinename (one line for each machine). Then in properties of the TCP IP set the LMHOST file on. Works fine. Meanwhile I hope anyone finds a good solution for the dynamic ips. Regards.
