I'm using Windows XP Home Edition. I can't rename files or folders by any
method. I have tried two slow clicks on the name and that just beeps at me.
I have also tried the drop down file menu but the "rename" option is light
grey and not functioning. The F2 key just beeps when I try it.

Thank You Rodney! You are the first person that has been able to identify
the issue. I have an interesting thing happening though. I checked out what
I was logged in at and confirmed that I was logged in as administrator. So,
I created a new user profile and gave it full administrator access. When I
logged in under the new user profile I could rename files. I still can't
rename files under the original user profile. This is a huge step in the
right direction. Do you know by chance if you can control what the
administrator has access to? Is there an option somewhere that is turned off
on my original user profile? If it is just a bad profile ,and I need to
switch to the new profile, is there a way to set up the new profile so I have
access to all of my old profile programs and settings. I noticed that the
new profile is missing icons to programs on the screen. If you know let me
know. Thank you again for the help. I have a notebook that came with
Windows XP preloaded by HP and no install disk. Just a system recovery set
of disks that wipes out all of your files if you reload windows with it. Not
too sensible.

Thanks.
