Did your new Pc come with a copy of Microsoft Word
Windows XP is an OS not a word processor
Windows product has never come with Word
You will need to purchase a copy of it

Install "Word" (MS Office) and use it to open your old Word documents.
If you're trying to open these files with "Wordpad", you may want to read

"Error message when you open a document file in Windows XP Service Pack 2"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883090/en-us

You can also use notepad.exe but you'll lose all your formating. Save as
..txt files just to have a BU

Why should I do that - note that I'm *not* the OP. Besides the fact that
there is MS Office installed on all of my machines, there is no need to
fiddle around with Notepad. If you follow the article that you have
quoted, Wordpad will open these *.doc files w/o losing the formatting.
