I CANNOT make TOC Styles Behave!!

I thought I understood the concept behind using TOC styles, but
evidently not. My Table of Contents has "duplicate" outlined
numbering, ie:

I. I. Heading 1.
A. A. Heading 2.

It looks like the first outlined number is outside of the TOC field
because it doesn't show up in grey when I select the Table of
Contents.

Does anyone have an idea as to what would cause this? I've wasted
two hours trying to fix it.

Thanks!

Jessi

It sounds as if the TOC is picking up the heading numbering but numbering
has also been applied to the TOC styles.
