I cannot delete emails

I cannot delete messages out of the delete folder. I have my windows email
program set to empty the deleted folder on exit. I have tried closing the
program multiple times, rebooted the computer, tried to delete all of the
them using shift delete and I keep getting the error message unknown error,
and the messages are still there. How can I fix this?
 
right click deleted items folder, then select 'empty "deleted items"
folder'...I have same issue...
