I cannot change text when I select it

When I select a section of text using mouse or keyboard, I cannot change it
by typing text to replace or deleting it. I can still change to formatting,
but to change a section or word I have to delete it using backspace or del.
Is this a setting somewhere that I activated automatically?

Try the following: On the Tools menu, click Options. Click the Edit
tab. Check the box next to "Typing replaces selection", and click OK.

Try Tools, Options, Edit - Typing Replaces Selection should be ticked
