I can ping but not share.

Andy Parker

My setup is this: A belkin wireless router with inbuilt
ADSL router, a PC(GJARKER) (internet 56K and printer
host) wired to the router and one laptop(LAPTOP) and one
PC(ANDREW) wirelessly connected. All the PC's can ping
each other and the router. The laptop and the wired PC
can see each others shared files and can see the wireless
PC's files, but the wireless pc cannot see any shared
files. At one point i got internet and printer sharing to
work but now the internet doesnt work. This suggests to
me it is something to do with the way xp is setup. (They
all use xp home). The (ANDREW) pc could access the
internet but now cant do anyting apart from ping and use
a chat program to chat to the other PC's. Any help would
be greatly appreciated thank you.

p.s. I have run the network setup wizard on all three
nodes. Please email me the answer.

Andy,

Asked here, answered here. For everybody's benefit.

Please describe in a bit more detail how everything is connected. Are you
getting (when working) internet service from DSL, or from the GJARKER 56K
dialup?

What settings did you specify when you ran the wizard?

What chat program are you using on ANDREW?

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or third party)? If so,
you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445 and
UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in the
Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of
(network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Cheers,
Chuck

Firstly i have no dsl but i connect through 56k
connection on GJPARKER. I have got printing to work on
the LAPTOP, from GJPARKER. i am not at home at the moment
but i will do ipconfig and post it next time. I am using
a third party freeware lan chat program to talk between
the PC's thats the only thing that works on (ANDREW).

The router has a built in firewall but the laptop and
GJPARKER can see the files on each other and even ANDREW.
Apart from that i have disabled xp firewall and have no
3rd party firewall. Thanks for your help.

Andrew,

OK, I have a picture now how you're setup.

I think I know where your problem lies. But I can recommend a solution a lot
better with some more questions answered (and the ipconfigs from all three
computers).

What did you change since Andrew "could access the internet"? How is GJPARKER
connected to the router (what port does it plug into)? Are you using a proxy
server or ICF on GJPARKER?

Cheers,
Chuck

GJPARKER is plugged into socket 1 of 4 at the back of the
router and i use ICS to share the connection. If i knew
what i changed to make it not work i would have mended it
so sorry i cant remember.

Andrew,

OK, if you can't remember, we'll just have to work around that.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Please list each labeled socket on the back of the router, and what cable is
plugged in to each one.

To review, when you want to run ICS to share the internet service, and use a
router to connect the sharing clients, you have to:
1) Disable DHCP on the router.
2) Connect the ICS server, and all ICS clients, as peers to the LAN side of the
router.
3) Change the LAN address of the router from 192.168.0.1 to something like
192.168.0.99 (gotta keep it on 192.168.0/24 subnet).
4) Setup the LAN interface on the ICS server as 192.168.0.1 (automatic).
5) Setup any ICS clients to use DHCP for all settings (obtain IP address and
DNS servers automatically).
6) If you're going to do file sharing, either disable ICF on the ICS LAN
connection (not recommended for a wireless router), or open the following ports
in ICF for the LAN connection: TCP 139, 445; UDP 137, 138, 445.

Cheers,
Chuck
