I can not read end note and citation

whenever I open a word document with endnote, and references included in it,
it is not read as it should be.. In other words, I am getting funny words
instead of the small numbers..here is an example
undergoing open surgery<Refman><Cite><Author>Binder</Author><Year>..
please help
 
You are viewing field codes instead of field results, I think. Try Alt-F9
to Toggle Field Codes.
