I am unable to change the side margins when printing e-mails

Both of my printers put a 1/4" margin when printing e-mails, which causes one
or two letters at the beginning of each line to be cut off. I have increased
the margins in printer setup, but it has no effect.

Could be the printer. Most won't let you print right up to the edges of
the paper (because the ink or carbon would end up splattering off the
page). It is a mechanical restriction that cannot be overridden with
driver or application settings. Rather than trying to stretch the
physically printable area, won't the lines wrap if you use normal-sized
margins?
