Hyperlinks to .msg files

When I we create a hyperlink to a .msg document (which was created in
Windows 2000) on the network , the error message 'cannot open specified file"
is displayed.

I am using a Windows XP machine and I believe the same problem occurs for
Windows 2000 users when trying to open hyperlinks to Outlook messages from my
machine.

Do I need to convert the .msg files to another format in order to open them?
Or is there another way of doing this by preserving the file format?

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

maybe the filepath contains spaces? Did you try it with a msg, saved in
the root of a networkdrive? Of did you try it with the same filename,
only having another extension. e.g. did you save a Worddocument in the
same way.
By the way how (and why) did you make a hyperlink to the document?

Have tried to save again - this time creating a filename without spaces.
Hyperlinks are inserted into the Excel spreadsheet using insert/hyperlink
and pasting the full path of the file into the address line and text to
display line.
Still get error message 'cannot open file' The Excel document is saved in
the same directory.

Where do I go from here?

Can you post or send me the Excelsheet? Watch out, don't mention any
personal information, maybe even better make a new sheet with only a
simple msg hyperlink.
Besides, you don't have any problems with hyperlinks to other
documents?

Hi,

I've emailed you directly a sample (blank) SS containing a single hyperlink
saved in the same way, together with a print screen of the error message - I
don't know whether this will be of help to you in offering a possible
solution, but I thought it was worth a try.

The hyperlink in your Excelsheet contained dubious information. The
text shown was G:\project1\test.msg, but the actual hyperlink (the link
to the 'file name') was defined as
\\servername\GROUP\TEXT19\TEXT19\project1\test.msg
(I changed some text for security reasons).

You mentioned some people weren't able to open the hyperlink. This is
caused by the server path, unreachable for them. Maybe the have other
mappings to the same directory. In that case refer only to the drive
mapping G:\

Change the hyperlink in the excelsheet by using right click on the
hyperlink, choose hyperlink, edit hyperlink. Especialy the 'file name'
should be accessible for all users. The text to display can even be
short e.g. "test email".

I think it gives you a lot of craft to create all those hyperlinks.

direction and I'm sure once I get the drives re-mapped to a common path, the
problem should resolve itself.
