Hyperlink selecting whole page?

I am using Frontpage 2003. When I select a word and then click on Hyperlink,
instead of only the one word being selected, I can see the whole page being
highlighted in the background. If I continue to make the link, every word on
the page is turned into a hyperlink instead of just the one word. I don't
understand why the whole page is being selected instead of just the one word.
I am thinking there must be an option somewhere that Frontpage is defaluting
to and selecting the page instead of just the one word, but I can't find it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Steven

There's no option like you elude to.
how are you selecting the word, and where are you bringing up the hyperlink
dialog box from(right click or toolbar)?
also, what view are you in (code, split, design)?

I am in design mode. I have tried highlighting the word and and then clicking
on hyperlink from the toolbar, highlighting the word and right clicking on
the word and then selecting hyperlink, and I have just put the cursor in the
middle of the word and tried both.

Since I sent the email, I thought to try something new. I have opened
Frontpage without opening my web site, started a new page and tried the same
thing and Frontpage works correctly. I opened my website, opened a new page
and tried it and it again works correctly. When I open one of my existing
pages, that is when it doesn't work correctly. So I have some sort of code or
something on my webpages that is causing this. It happens accross the board
on all pages. So, I am in the process of eleminating code from the page to
try and figure out what is causing it. Since I have found this out, I don't
know that anyone is going to be able to help me unless they happened to have
had the same thing happen. I do appreciate your response though.

FrontPage 2003, go to code view or split view, set your cursor in the page
and select all, then right click and try reformat HTML. see if that helps.

Are you certain the word you are selecting is not in a shared border or include page

Chirs and Stefan,
Thank you for your responses. I found the offending code. For some reason,
every one of my web pages has this line <a name="top"> right after the body
tag. Once I remove that line, everything works just like it is supposed to. I
can't explain why that line got on every page or how it is affecting the
whole page when trying to insert a hyperlink, but it is. My solution is to
delete the line and all is normal. Go figure.

Again, thanks for your help.

Forgive me jumping in, but that's a simple named anchor (or BOOKMARK, as FP
calls it). It could not possible cause such problems - UNLESS there were no
closing anchor tag. Can you show me the body tag and the 5 following lines,
please?

I'll bet you $50 it was an unclosed tag.
that's a good use for the "reformat html" and "optimize html" functions in
FrontPage 2003's code view.

What's curious is that another opening <a> should have closed it by
implication. I'll wait to see the code....

Murry,
No need to send you the code. You hit it right on the head. It was an
unclosed tag. I will be looking at Chris's suggestion"good use for the
"reformat html" and "optimize html" functions".
Thanks mucho to all.
