Hyper Terminal - Windows XP

John Linker

I've used the Hyper Terminal program with Windows 98 but
I can't find it in Windows XP Home Edition even after
downloading Service Pak 2. Is it available on Windows XP
and if so how can I find it or download it?

Thanks

I don't think Hyperterminal is installed by default in the Home
edition. It is in Pro. Anyway, it's not as good as the free
Hyperterminal PE (personal edition) which supports more protocols,
emulations, and also key macros.

You can download HTPE from www.hilgraeve.com.

Thanks, I suspected it might not be included in XP Home
Edition. I check into Hilgraeve.

Thanks Bruce,
I've tried as you suggested but when I click on
HyperTerminal (after going through accessories and
Communications) there is no response.

Thanks,
I've had some suggestions to access HyperTerminal on
Windows XP by going from Programs to Accessories to
Communications to HyperTerminal, which I'd done but
there's no respons when I click on HyperTerminal. I think
your suspicion that HyperTerminal is not included in XP's
Home Edition sre correct.

I went to the Hilgraeve web site as you suggested. There
were two options to download HTPE 6.3: "Hilgraeve FTP"
and "Hilgreave HTTP", which I guess are install files.
Do you have any suggestion which I should download? I've
downloaded "Hilgraeve HTTP". Are there any precautions
you'd suggest I take before installing Hilgraeve HTTP?

Bruce,

I'd tried accessing HyperTerminal by going from Programs
to Accessories to Communications to HyperTerminal, but
when I click on HyperTerminal there is no response.
Makes me suspicious it is not included in Windows XP Home
Edition.

I've had a suggestion to go to Hilgrave's web site and
download HTPE, which I've done.

If you have any further suggestions I'd appreciate
hearing from you.

Thanks for the help.

Carey,
Thanks for the response. I tried to access "Using
HyperTerminal" as you suggested but was unable to find it
in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. I could find the
Support Center for XP but not "Help and Support Center".
When I was at the screen for the XP Support Center I
could find no reference or connection to HyperTerminal.
Doesn't mean it's not there because I'm not too familiar
with accessing the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Any
suggestions?

One of the suggestions I received was to go to the
Hilgraeve web site and download HTPE which I've done on
the basis that neither HyperTerminal nor access to it is
included in the Home Edition for XP.

If you have any further suggestions or precautions I'd
appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks for the help.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) are
just different methods of getting the installation executable. The
executable is the same in either case. Now that you've downloaded the
executable, double-click it to install it and enjoy your use of
HyperTerminal.

HyperTerminal is installed on the two WinXP Home machines I have
here, without my having to make any additional attempts to install it.
So I have to conclude that it is installed by default on WinXP Home.
Of course, this doesn't mean that some OEMs may not have left it out
of their customized implementations. However, I don't think you'd
have the Start Menu shortcut present if the program had not been
installed at some point.

The executable should be located at "C:\Program Files\Windows
NT\Hypertrm.exe." If you cannot find it there, or if double-clicking
directly upon the executable file yields the same lack of results, you
may need to reinstall it.

Running "SFC /Scannow" from the command prompt may be all that is
necessary for WinXP to repair itself. Alternatively, you could try
using the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs Applet to first remove
it, and then add it again, after rebooting. the option should be
found under the Windows Components portion of the Add/Remove Programs
Applet.

Bruce, I think I may have solved the problem. I found HYPERTRM in "Program Files/Windows NT" as you suggested. Then copied it and pasted it into Accessories/Communications/Hyperterminal, which was empty. Seems to work OK.

I looked for acces in the Control Panel/Add and Remove Programs for Windows
Components but could. Looked al through it but not find nywhere any
reference to Communications orHyperterminal such as was available in Windoes
98.

Anyway thanks much. You did contribute to solving the problem.

there is something interesting there are alternative hyperterminal programs like tera term and putty that I would recommend. I prefer tera term. the other thing is have you upgraded to xp sp3. there was something I was seeing on another site where they said if you install sp3 you get the personal edition. today a possible matter is download the private edition. the problem is 7.0 you have to pay for where 6.3 you do not need to pay for. look it up on google
