I started writing a word document about a month ago on Word
2000 and while publishing the 6th versions of the same
document I realized that the document size had grown to
almost 3MB.

The total pages in the document is just 40.

It is a normal document and has no objects/graphics/video
or any such thing. All it has is text and some tables.

Just to test it further, I deleted the contents of the
document and still the document remains at 2.7MB ! This is
a blank document and does not have even a single character
in it.

Can you someone explain me why this is happenning and how
to rectify it?

Thx

To quote MVP Suzanne Barnhill's standard answer:

--------------
There are a number of reasons for excessive file size,
including:

1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools |
Options.

2. Preview Picture: Clear the check box on the Summary
tab of File | Properties.

3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically
save version on close" is not turned on.

4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes):
Highlight Changes: Make sure "Highlight changes on
screen" is turned on.
Accept/Reject Changes: If "Accept All" or "Reject
All" is available then revisions are present; accept or
reject all changes, then turn Track Changes off.

5. Embedded True Type fonts (Tools | Options | Save);
embedding fonts should be avoided wherever possible.

6. Embedded graphics: When feasible, it is preferable to
link the graphics.

7. Document corruption: See

Actually, I think that answer was originally cribbed from Beth Melton (or
maybe even you), but I've used it so much I've stopped attributing it. <g>
