Hi

I have installed windows xp on a test PC, along with ms office and all
the updates. Is it me being naive, or is it normal for this kind of
install to use more than 3 gigabytes of disk space.

Is there any way that I can safely reduce the size of the install?

Kev

mine was closer to 4, so I think yours is normal.

Jeeesus christ. I have a pentium 133 PC running freebsd with mozilla
and open office on a 1 gig hard drive.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the disk space used?

It is normal for an XP and XP Office installation.. I fail to see your
problem really, unless of course the installation was done on a PC that does
not have the hardware to fully support it..

You may find that the disk space used is radically reduced by performing
disk cleanup, including deleting system restore points and the backup files
for updates, however, 3 Gig's is not all that far out of line.

FOUR?! What the hell do you have installed in there?! I've installed Windows
XP (all options) and Office 2003 in its entirety and mine is just over 2.

If your hard drive is so infinitesimally small, that you're worried about
space, buy a bigger one! Hard drives are going for silly money these days -
I bought a 160GB for £70 the other day - that's 44p a GB. How much cheaper
do you want it?!

XP Pro, office 2003 pro corporate took 3 with all updates and addons. MS
Flight sim takes up another gig. probably should have posted the 3 gb as the
more accurate one.

You're admitting to running pirate versions on a group hosted by the company
you're ripping off?! You're either very naive or very stupid.

How do I know they're pirate?! Well there is no such thing as "XP Pro or
Office 2003 Pro Corporate" - that is the name given by the 'warez' community
to the version they created from a Volume Licence disc. MS has /never/
termed any of its licences as 'Corporate'.

a licensed copy (I assumed corporate edition was correct name) given to me
to use by my employer so I can work from home during down time. never heard
of warez and searching the install disk did not show that name either. I
made a mistake in name, whats your excuse for running your mouth w/o all the
facts. I'm fairly positive a multi-billion dollar company (AMR) would not
pirate copies.

I've discovered that disabling hibernation in power panagement in
control panel saved me 500+ Mb. That removes a hidden system file
hiberfil.sys from the root of C:

And I cut my initial pagefile size down to 256 Mb saving another 500+
Mb. Which slashes pagefile.sys from the root of C:\ down to 256 Mb.
