When I want to go to a webpage (for example google.com),I
type in www.google.com. Up until yesterday the http:\\
component of the address automatically was filled in.
This is not happening now. I have to type this in also
in order to get to the web page.

I am sure it is just a matter of a simple setting (I
hope), but can't figure it out. Any hints?

Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?
