Just started happening.. Running XP professional SP2 all up to date with
virus checking, spyware stuff etc.. and this error just started happening on
startup:

c:\windows\htpatch.exe
NTVDM cpu has encountered an illegal instruction.
close or ignore

I close it and the system seems to function properly..

Googling tells me it has something to do with SiS multithreading but I have
no idea if my systems uses multithreading. It's an ASUS P4S533 MX.
Can anyone tell me what this is and how to fix\eliminate the error?
thanks

See this about Hyper-Threading

It would really surprise me that something related to Hyper-Threading was a
16-bit program.

NTVDM.EXE (NT Virtual DOS Machine) is used in conjuction with wow.exe to run
16-bit applications.

NTVDM CPU Has Encountered an Illegal Instruction

Entries in Config.nt or Autoexec.nt May Cause NTVDM Errors

Run the System File Checker (sfc.exe)...
sfc /scannow checks the files in %windir%\System32 if any are screwed up
it replaces the screwed up file with a copy from
%windir%\System32\dllcache or the Windows installation source files.
Which in your case is probably the C:\I386 folder.

Click Start | Click Run | Paste this in the Run box...

sfc /scannow

Then click OK.

It should take a while to run.

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection
entries

Also update your antvirus and anti-spyware applications and run full system
scans.

thanks wesley.
I ran the System File checker and looked at the event viewer. Nothing wrong
as far as I can tell. However, the htpatch error still occurs on startup..

Antvirus and anti-spyware scans resulted in?

[[htpatch.exe patch which offers multi-threading support for GPU's on SiS
motherboards. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not
be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.]] Yours seems to be
causing problems, see about disabling it from starting.
