HP's La Fiorina is playing the ink game

Are you also impressed by the fact that La Fiorina has cut the cartridge
capacity to 2000 pages... for 5% covererage? Do you really figure you'll get
2000 pages? (See deep down inside the user manual, that's the only place
you'll find the info about the cartridge capacity.) For 6$ (CAN) more, you can
get 1000 pages extra from a Samsung ML-1740 cartridge!

The salesman at Staples told me the black ink cartridge for the PSC 1350 costs
40$... for 250 pages!!! La Fiorina is really playing the ink game!

The lady is scrapping HP's reputation to patch the holes she created. Just as
Iacocca did at Chrysler's without creating the problems, I'd like to see her
put the ink/toner back in the cartridges from her multi-million dollar salary.

For figures see:

Hey! You put a lot of ink back in the cartridges for that kind of money.

As you can see, the problem is not only Korean wages being lower, it's
America's top level "officers" pillaging their companies.

Samsung is a much larger company than HP. Do you figure its president is paid
the kind of money La Fiorina is getting?

Still impressed? Comments, Mr Headrick?

Hey GP! You really need to get over this rant your on, about the excessive
cost of inkjet ink, and laser toner! We're all too well aware of the high
cost of consumables. Get over it!

Maybe you should consider starting a business, competing with these
companies you keep complaining about. Think of all the business you could
get away from them, and still make a great profit!

Of course! Thanks for bringing me back to my senses! What's expensive is not
La Fiorina's emoluments and jet at a few tenth millions a year, it's the toner.

So, let's compare two printers, the HP 1012 and the Brother HL-5140:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/fr/un/WF06a/18972-236251-236263-14638-236263-377934.html
http://solutions.brother.com/hl5140_all/en_us/spec.html

The Brother HL-5140, after a $50 coupon rebate, comes down to $300 (CAN) at
Staples, the HP 1012, after a $110 instant rebate, is $190. So the 1012 is
much cheaper. Or is it?

The 1012 comes with a 1,000 pages half empty cartridge, the HL-5140 with a
full 3,500 pages cartridge. So you have to pay 2,500 pages extra for the 1012
to get even. At $90 / 2000 pages cartridge(1), that's $90 * 1.25 = $112.50.
$190 + 112.50 = 302.50$. So, they're the same price. Or are they?

The 1012 is host based not networkable, the HL-5140 is networkable. The 1012
has 8 megs unexpandable memory, the HL-5140 16 megs expandable to 144 in case
you want to network it. The HL-5140 offers full PCL6 support, the 1012
language is not stated.

Linuxprinting says: "language looks like PJL + PCL 6" and "HP LaserJet 1010
works (...) with all raster drivers for the HP LaserJet 1100. Unfortunately,
the new LaserJet 1010/1012/1015 series seems not to be absolutely compatible
with older HP printers or it has a firmware bug. Sometimes it happens that the
printer stops working and reports the error "Unsupported Personality: PCL".

http://linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1012

The ML-5140 has a 250 sheets paper tray option, the 1012, none.

Brother offers a 6,700 sheet cartridge for 135$ at Staples, which means each
page comes down to 2¢. Add 1¢ for the drum, there's still no need to make
prints and then go to the photocopy shop.

The 1012 weights 13 pounds, the ML-5140, 23. When you look at both printers in
the store, the first looks like a flimsy toy, the second one like a sturdy
piece of equipment.

Reviews say that the 1012 has better graphic quality. But I remember I went
for my Canon BJ-300 because quality was better than the Deskjet 500's and
bitterly regreted it. And I don't remember the last time I printed graphics.

I've learned a lot from you, Mr Crocker, about eating aunt Betty's cake and
keeping my mouth shut. I now believe I could live under Nero and not worry, be
happy. Still, I sometimes briefly wonder if La Fiorina's emoluments are not
just a tiny bit on the high side.

Some will say that if she got you into thinking that the 1012 is a good deal,
she should get a raise, and in this economic system of ours it's certainly a
contention that's hard to counterargue.

While I'm not rich, I don't have the time to concern myself with such
trivial matters. Which makes me wonder why I even took the time to respond.
That being said, enough on this subject...for me at least.
